Overview
Manali to Leh Cycling Tour via Rohtang & Khardung La
The Manali to Leh cycling tour is one of the most exhilarating and spiritually uplifting adventures on two wheels. Stretching across approximately 550 kilometers, the route traverses some of the world’s highest motorable passes, desert valleys, and remote Himalayan outposts. For passionate cyclists, this journey isn’t just a ride — it’s a test of endurance, patience, willpower, and the unmatched beauty of Ladakh’s raw, untamed terrain.
The Journey Begins in Manali
Nestled in the lush Kullu Valley at 6,730 feet, Manali is a perfect base to start your high-altitude cycling odyssey.
Climbing to Rohtang La (13,050 ft)
The real adventure kicks off as you ascend towards Rohtang Pass, a legendary gateway into the Lahaul-Spiti region. The 51-km climb from Manali to Marhi and then Rohtang is tough, steep, and filled with switchbacks.
Lahaul: Keylong, Jispa, and Beyond
Descending from Rohtang, you cycle through villages like Keylong and Jispa — quaint hamlets hugging the Bhaga River. The route gradually gains altitude, taking you through Zing Zing Bar and onwards to Baralacha La (16,040 ft)
Life at the Edge: Sarchu, Gata Loops & Nakee La
Sarchu, at 14,000 ft, lies on the border of Himachal and Ladakh. Nights here are cold and starlit, and you begin to feel the isolation of the high desert. Ahead lie the Gata Loops — 21 switchbacks that test your stamina and determination. They lead to Nakee La and then Lachulung La, two more high passes that break your body but lift your spirit.
The Surreal More Plains & Tanglang La
Descending from Pang, you enter the More Plains — an unreal 40-kilometer stretch of flatland at 15,000 feet.
Then comes the mighty Tanglang La — the second-highest pass on the route at 17,480 feet. It’s a slow, steady climb that challenges every cell in your body.
Leh: Arrival in the Land of Lamas
As you descend into Leh, the capital of Ladakh, the change is both emotional and physical. You’ve cycled over 500 kilometers, crossed 5–6 mountain passes, and climbed to heights that most only dream of. Leh, at 11,500 feet, feels like a reward
The Final Climb: Khardung La (18,380 ft)
But the adventure isn’t truly complete without cycling to Khardung La, claimed to be the world’s highest motorable pass. This 40-kilometer uphill ride from Leh is the crown jewel of the journey.
The descent back to Leh is pure joy, with gravity finally working in your favor.
